Private Film Set
Our products often feature in films and stage productions. We are well known for our ultra-realistic replicas that are ready in a timeframe that works for project deadlines.
The Brief
Our customer required a series of large logs to use as props in their film. Due to the size required, real logs weren’t available locally. They turned to us to make artificial replicas. They had to be extremely lifelike, incredibly detailed and indistinguishable from the real thing as they would be seen from closeup.
Our Solution
We sat down as a team and researched what these logs should look like to match the location the film is set in. creating a series of mock-ups and narrowing them down until picking the best result. We have just faced a large storm here in the UK, which devastatingly left multiple trees damaged and fallen over. We took this opportunity (with permission) to take moulds from pine trees. With these moulds and our own in-house sculpting, we created the perfect replica bark. The logs all started as a polystyrene tube cut using our CNC cutter. We strengthened the polystyrene lengths, hand-applied our bark, and capped the ends to match a sawn log. Painting is a highly skilled job and takes a lot of time. A technique called ‘dry brushing’ was used to bring out texture and detail in the bark.
The Outcome
We ended up with an ultra-realistic pie of logs that even staff were fooled by. Despite the size, these replica logs are very lightweight and perfect for moving around a film set. It was a pleasure to be a part of such a great project, and we look forward to seeing them while watching the film soon. This project was very time-sensitive, and it was great that the whole business got involved at one stage or another, a real team effort!
